I have finished the first 2 of my 10 x 10 (2 1/2 inch) blocks for the queen size quilt for our bed. I have never yet finished a quilt for my bed, so it will be interesting how things go on this project turns out. At the time of this post I have actually made 7 of these now. Each block is 100 2 1/2 inch blocks they are going to be a lot of fun. There are some fun left over fabrics (from quilts Tanya has made in the past) in these blocks and there are even more colors that Tanya picked FQ's that I chopped completely into 2 1/2 inch blocks.
You can see some of the variety of the squares in the piles around my machine that I was sewing together. My process of random is grabbing 2 blocks sewing them together and doing huge long chains of those. Once those are all done I cut them apart and toss them into a basket and mix them around. And then I start sewing the pairs to each other. Until I end up with rows of 10.
I then iron my rows and stack them in 2 piles and then start sewing them together. Next thing you know I have blocks of 100 squares done. I think I will need some where around 14 blocks of this color group and I think it was 12 of the brown. We are still tossing around ideas on the exact size of the quilt so I have not yet finalized my design in EQ7. What do you consider a perfect size queen?
These 2 blocks are the same as the 2 above just a little more close up so you can see them better.
Along with the 2 blocks I did finish the last top we will have from the pieces of hope line. This baby quilt when finished will end up on our Etsy store or given as a gift.
This is my kind of sewing! I am doing a postage stamp quilt right now in similar fashion (smaller bits and smaller quilt) - my 'pre-cuts' are the trimmed down left overs from prior projects - so very scrappy. BUT just love this teal colour going on right here - going to be great!!!
ReplyDeleteLove your scientific method! Sew much for quilt math.... Sounds like a fun way to go. BTW - I love the turquoise. Is this the quilt you were planning, inspired by the scrappy swoon?
ReplyDeleteOh yeah!!!! Love all those sweet aqua prints :*) This will be gorgeous on your bed!!!
ReplyDeletePretty aquas, and well organized.
ReplyDeleteI just love the fabrics you are using for your quilt. The aqua is so fresh looking.
ReplyDeleteJust like everyone has said, what a yummy color you are using. I'm saving 2 1/2" sqs for a quilt I want to make. Sounds like you have a great method for sewing the big blocks.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful colors you are using. I see a beautiful quilt in the making. Can't wait to see it finished.
ReplyDeleteTo decide on size, I measure my actual mattress top, add the drop to where I want it to fall on the bed frame, add more to length if I want a tuck under the pillows. Whatever it comes out is the size I make it. My bed has a long drop to the floor because the mattress and box spring are really fat, so using a pre-determined size wouldn't work. Some people have dust ruffles and some don't, so that makes a difference, too.
ReplyDeleteGreat advice. I also add a shrinkage allowance. The percentage of quilt size will vary depending on the type of wadding/batting used. Wool will shrink more than cotton and cotton more than polyester. If you use one type of wadding/batting perhaps do a shrink test on a crib size quilt to establish the percentage that you need to add to all quilt tops that you plan on using that wadding/batting in.
Deletelovein' those fabrics.
