Dayton's Quilt

Dayton's Quilt for the lack of any other name I could think of is finally done.  I have decided I will never do a rag quilt this big again and I am going to be more picky about materials on the next one I do also.  This quilt ended up 12 blocks wide by 14 blocks long.  I did not want to do the 6 inch blocks (5 inches after the 1 inch in the seams) that I have done on all the other rag quilts I have done so I went out and bought new rulers I bought 8 1/2 inch wide square and long ruler and used to make these blocks.  My brother picked out boring black flannel for the back and he picked 3 fabrics.
The black was a great material the other 2 not so great I don't think they were 100% cotton and not being all so skilled at this I did not know any better.  The blue material is quite stiff and even after washing 2 times never did fray at all the red material was a little better.  You can also see the white batting that my brother bought sticking out the seams on many of the squares.  Maybe because the quilt is so huge it did not wash and their for fray well.  But hey its done.  Any way this is a big one for me and I am happy to call it my first finish for March.  It measured in at 90 inches wide and 105 inches long.

  5. He looks happy enough with it, and it will be warm. He picked the fabrics, so he has to like it. =)

  6. The batting is supposed to show isn't it? Besides the white adds dimension. That's a big project to finish and obviously your brother is pleased so congratulations all around.

  8. Take it to the laundromat and put it one of the fifty-pound washers. That ought to fray it ;).

I love the colors. And man, that is one big quilt! Congrats on a great finish and thanks for linking up!

  9. Yeah, that *is* big. :D I think it's terrific, not boring. Super man's quilt for a brother. Don't worry about the fraying - it'll happen soon enough as your brother washes it. Hopefully the blue with soften up.
