Matching Quilts
This post by Tanya, but quilt made by Richard. For Christmas, OK, quite a bit after Christmas, Rebecca's twin size quilt was finished by Richard.
Here is the baby size version for little Julia, the leftover fabrics with a twist. Rebecca's quilt had matching fabric on all blocks. The back of Julia's is a pale blue, where Rebecca's was a white muslin. We used a blue, red, white, and gray striped binding on Julia's. Richard thought the binding looked too boring in the fabric store. I think it was just the touch the quilt needed.
Do you buy your bindings at the same time you buy the stuff for top or later as an after thought? Do you take a block or the quilt with you or just try to find something that you think will match. We have done it both ways. Only once or twice have we bought something that would not work. I usually don't take more than scrap of fabric if anything to the store.
For a little bit of a modern take, one spot is plain white, no block. That and we ran out of fabric. It is a line that is few years old. The original fabric and some completed blocks came from someone in our quilt guild. We added a lot of Kona white and manged to make two quilts from it, one for each of the girls.
I think I like the scrappy look of Julia's better. She has so many quilts and is still at the stage she doesn't really like them yet. Hopefully she starts, before they are all too small for her.
My recent pictures have involved a lot in a white chair next to rosebushes, Richard claims it is getting old. I put a couple in anyway. I like my roses and the chair, the weeds not so much. I also had my helper cat in the last one. Rat Cat likes to follow me.
LOVE LOVE LOVE the white spot for the modern missing spool!!! I need to plan that in one of my quilts I like is to much! I also LOVE the binding. It does give it that perfect touch. I wait until my quilt is ready to be quilted to decide upon the binding. Since most of my quilts are scrappy, it's usually something from my stash. Often times (especially charity quilts that I longarm for our local quilt guild) I use the excess fabric from the backing as the binding as well.
ReplyDeleteIt turned out great! About bindings. I like your choice for this quilt. It never ceases to amaze me, the difference between fabric on the bolt and a small bit on a quilt. Two totally different looks.
ReplyDeleteI usually have an idea of how I will bind a quilt as I am making the top. IF I am shopping for a specific quilt I'll buy an extra half yard of the fabric I intend for the binding. But usually I have only a vague idea when shopping and keep buying fabric that "might" go into it. If I can't find binding in my stash when the top is finished, I take it with me to the shop.
I have used stash AND bought fabric for binding. It is much like framing a picture. It makes a lot of difference in the finished look.
ReplyDeleteLove it, what's this pattern??
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt! Lucky Rebecca. Your children are all so lucky to have their own quilts. You and Richard are doing a great job of growing your quilting skills. You've just leaped right in with both feet!
ReplyDeleteI always wait for the binding fabric and then I pick it out of stash if I am lucky or Joanns or online. Doh....don't know why I do that to myself.:)
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to find a really good spot to take photos. When you do find one, I always get comfortable and never want to switch it up!
Love these quilts! The white looks so nice with the scrappy spools. I have done the binding both ways. Love stripes on a binding.
