Oh Tanya has a new toy or is it Richards?

What a cute little kitten.  My wife has been in need of a sewing machine for a while (since we gave hers to our daughter for part of her Christmas) We have wanted to try some simple embroidery yet needed a machine that she could do normal sewing on also.  This was a lower end machine that gave us options for both without investing too much.

This is a picture of the machine I got off the web.  Tanya had to go to work before she even got to play with it and told me to go figure it out.  It has a few built in designs and since we are partial to cats, I made a cat.

Now for questions.  Is there any free or cheaper end software that can be used to make our own embroidery designs.  I found online a demo for the high end brother editing software and my son and I were able to make a design we liked using it.  But of course demo software, I can't export my design.   It seemed easy enough.  I look up the price tag and gagged on the 900+ price tag.   Such is life.  Any way if you have experience with Embroidery let me know your thoughts.

The cheapest thing I have found (search and shop for a good price!) is Embroidery Magic 2. (got mine off eBay)
It really depends on what you want to do though. EM2 does not do "auto digitizing" If you want auto digitizing, one of the cheapest I found is Digitize N Stitch. My results with it have been variable. Some things come out great, others are pretty bad.
For EM2 there is a good yahoo group that provides a lot of support.

Hi Richard, I use Sew What Pro software it is very reasonably priced. Check it out here:

looks close to mine :-) I have an OL' disney brother embroidery machine. DID find one thing- get NICE thread!! I've been fighting with my machine a LOT over the years but once I found out the thread kept breaking because I used cheap chinese embroidery thread I got on ebay, I tried something else and it worked much better- I also tried regular thread... AND often the thread would jump off the first "hook" thingy at the top, I taped a piece of cardstock on top so it can't jump off and it works like a CHARM now.... mostly make quilt labels.
have fun!

Richard Embird is a great program with excellent support. I suspect you two may move up to another machine in the near future and spending a little more for the software which would also give you the capability to digitize your own designs if you purchase some of the add ons could also be fun. You can buy the base program and then slowly add the extra pieces of software on as you want to expand which is nice. Many digitizers who have businesses selling their designs use Embird also.
I do not have it but my husband and I both researched multiple software programs for digitizing and also as a replacement down the road for my Viking software which is quite costly and Embird was the one we chose of all that were offered.
