Link A Finish Friday #111 and Julia's 2nd Birthday Giveaway!

For any one that does not remember why Tanya and I got into quilting in the first place it was Julia.  No she is not our first kid, she is the 4th.  In fact her older brother is 18 years old.  I learned to quilt, because I did not know any one that could make my at that time unborn baby a quilt.  Giving away is part of her B-day.  Do not fear we got her something too.

Our gift for you our followers is 6 Fat Quarters.  Below you can see the fabric you can win.  As for Julia, she has her boons (balloons) as she calls them.  Her grandmother bought her the pj's that says Its my B-Day!

So what do you have to do to win? That is a good question.  Tanya some times gives me grief, because I make it too hard and sometimes I think she makes it too easy.  I figure if you want a present you will work a little for it.  So this is what I would like.  For the easy entry Link Up to LAFF and leave a comment saying you did.  For a bonus entry, visit our Craftsy Patterns and leave a comment on one and then come back here and leave a comment.  If that is not enough for you and you really want to knock it out of the park, feel free to share our giveaway with your friends on either you blog, pin the giveaway, Facebook about it or share what ever other way you would like and leave a comment about it.

Well it is now time to link up (and enter the giveaway), next week I will make it up and do some highlights from this week and last week.  But for me, I am just going to hug and kiss Julia all day today as she is growing up. The giveaway for Julia's birthday will end Thursday, April 3rd.

Monthly Giveaway of $15 Gift Card from our sponsor Fat Quarter Shop. Please thank them and visit them for your quilting needs here are some of the places you can find them.

Link A Finish Friday #100 and Giveaway!!!

It is here our 100th Link A Finish Friday

What a long Journey it has been.  My first blog post was Jan 2, 2012 just 2 years and 7 days ago.  I still keep thinking of my self as a new quilter but so it seems I am not as new to quilting as I keep thinking.  Wow 2 years have gone by.  But hey this is not about how long I have been quilting or how long the blog has gone on but how long I have been doing Link A Finish Friday.  My first LAFF was held Jan 27, 2012 only 25 days after I started blogging in 2012.

It is funny looking back at that fist Linky I had only 9 quilts linked up which is really not so bad.  But if you consider that 5 of them were my own quilts then you cant be so excited or serious about it (though come to think of it only 25 days of quilting and already 5 link ups not half bad hu?).

This quilt Hearts and Flowers (still one of my favorite quilts we made) is featured on that post.  For most of you this trip down memory lane is not what you are here fore I know.  Its that word "Giveaway" that has you motivated to see what is going on.

Our giveaway today and our monthly giveaways as part of LAFF is due to our wonderful sponsor Fat Quarter Shop.   As you visit and do business with them please thank them for their continued support of Link A Finish Friday its success has been helped by their support.  If you are in need of quilting supplies please visit them at any of the links below.

Their store at http://www.fatquartershop.com/ their blog http://www.fatquartershop.blogspot.com/ and Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/FatQuarterShop

Today's giveaway pictured at the top of this post is a Chanlilly Jelly Roll.  To enter is simple.  Link up a finish to this week's Link A Finish Friday.

Most weeks the linkups are generally quilts finished with in the last week.  I want to have a bigger and even bolder list of finishes this week.  So I would like each person to link up to 4 finishes (you can link more but only 4 entry's per person).  You can link your favorite finishes, you can link up finishes that you linked in previous LAFF.  You can link up your mother's or friends favorite quilt (make sure you have their permission if its not your own).  Link up your least favorite or most favorite complete.  Link up the one you love the most or the one that your afraid to admit you completed (or never got completed).  Just link something up.

That is it.  Their is no other way to enter just linking up a quilt.  If you don't have a quilt, or don't quilt (or sew) then please go visit my Richard and Tanya Quilts Patterns on Craftsy.  2 years ago I was not a quilter either and now more projects completed then I can count.  I am motivated by you my fellow quilters and I want to see what your proud of.  And of course give you a Jelly roll so that you can then make another quilt.

Oh one last thing please let others know about LAFF and our giveaway. Feel free to comment I love them, but keep in mind only linked up items are entry's into this giveaway.

It is funny 100 Linky's later and the rules have not really changed.

1) Who likes rules. Toss them out.
2) Add a link to your finish blog or where ever you show off your finishes (Not limited to quilts but I like them the most).
3) Visit a few of the finishes and comment or encourage them on.
4) Monthly random winner picked from all of the months linkups to $15 gift card from Fat Quarter Shop. (and Today's Post only a chance to win the Chanlilly Jelly Roll)

Not required but fun to do

1) Follow my blog.
2) Follow the blog of all those that link.
3) Link back to my blog.
4) No finish, go quilt and stop reading the web.

A Modern Yardage Giveaway

Giveaway is now closed.

Today I would like to tell you a little about a fun company that is new and amazing on the quilting scene. They are located just a few miles from my home.  Their name is Modern Yardage.  Over the last year, a few of the members of the Salt Lake Modern Quilt Guild have brought and shown off projects and some of this fabric in our guild meetings.  I have been stewing about this for some time and finally decided I had to have some of this fabric.  Above is one of a few images I will post here of the fabric I bought.  This is from a line called Earth to Sky by Katie Schrader.  When I saw it I decided I had to have it all, but sadly Tanya stopped me from buying it all.  I did buy 10 fat quarters (I will be back for more later).

One of the neat things about Modern Yardage is they print (yes print) your fabric to order.  Unlike traditional quilting fabrics which are produced in mass and shipped to your LQS, this fabric is printed to your order.  You can read more about the how and why of it all on their site here.  For me I just say amazing.  I am a computer geek (oh and I quilt too) and the technology behind all of this is amazing.  Modern Design has rounded up an amazing team of fabric designers to bring us this amazing fabric.

One of the first things you will notice looking at what showed up in my box is how differently my 10 fat quarters showed up.  Modern Yardage prints their fabric 44 inches wide which is pretty standard, but their printer has a 58 inch fabric width.  Hum what to do with all that spare space.  As you can see in the images above that space is full of fun things.  The side is filled with all kinds of fun treasures.  My 10 fat quarters had a thank you note from modern yardage, a fabric care instructions, an about my designer image and a neat modern yardage logo section.  The designer of this fabric had a fun little bunting cutout that is also included and my daughters favorite item it had a skirt pattern at the end.

While I sit here thinking about where I am going to hang up my little bunting, I am sure you are thinking HEY! You got all this new fabric what do I get?

Today's giveaway  includes 4 Fat Quarters of your choice printed and sent to you!
Giveaway will close 8/30/2013

How do I win you say?  Multiple ways to enter, do as many or as few as you chose.

It is my B-Day and you get the presents!

Oh that time of year has come again, no not tax time.  Its my B-day.  I am getting old (though some of you may argue with me about that).  Today I turn 44.  My baby Julia makes me feel young as she is only 1 year old.  But then again, I remember 17 years ago feeling young when James was only 1 year old.  So young I am not any more.  But my loss of time is your reward.  I am giving away today to celebrate my B-Day.

Last year I went to HMQS just before my B-day and I picked up a bundle of Batiks and gave them away.  This year again I went to HMQS just before my B-Day and I picked up more Batiks. (No sadly I am not giving them away this year) Oh ya and I did get the above 4 fat quarters for my B-day Giveaway.  Tanya also threw in this hand crafted bowl that her sister Tosha made, (below is same thing, but the other side)

I want to keep this simple as the giveaway last week I personally responded to every email and after 444 of them it almost killed me.  This year I simply want you to share a B-Day wish with me.  I will ship any where in the world and the giveaway is only open for 3 days, as I do not want to draw this out too much.

Last year the Batiks I got from HMQS for my B-Day I made the above quilt (OK the dark and light grays I bought some where else, but all the little pieces in the middle)

I also made the above quilt after buying a bundle of the blue and yellow batiks.  Oh such a sweet quilt.  This quilt also was hung up in a local quilt shop for over a month (it is now down and for sell at that shop and on Etsy).  Now if you win what will you make with your prize?

Just in case you think I got nothing for myself I got 4 bundles of Batiks in 4 color groups 20 total fat quarters total and the below pattern.  If you know me at all, I love lizards and I could not resist this cute pattern I found.

P.S. Tanya has a birthday this month too, so make sure to come back in two weeks for another small giveaway.

Giveaway Day is Today! Sew, Mama, Sew

Giveaway is now Closed

Welcome to Richard and Tanya Quilts if you are new to our site let me quickly introduce us.  We are new to quilting as about a year ago.  When having our 4th child, I (Richard) wanted a quilt for my baby, but had no one in the family or friends to make me a quilt so I decided to make my own.  I started quilting a year and a half ago and now I like sharing my joy of quilting with those that visit us.

Our main giveaway today is this hand picked FQ set that we bought this last weekend from our local quilt shop.   It is a set of 8 fantastic black and white fabrics.  To win this giveaway is simple.  Comment below telling me what your favorite quilting style is.  1 Comment is all that is needed.  The Giveaway ends May 10th (but don't forget to stop by on the 13th its my B-day and another giveaway) I will ship any where in the world.

Because, I think every one is a winner and I like to give things away I have a number of patterns listed on Craftsy.  If you visit Craftsy and comment (nice comments please) on any of the patterns and then come back here and list the pattern in a comment I will send you that pattern for free "While Supplies Last" (can you even run out of PDF's?)  So yes every one is a winner! (This second comment is a extra entry too)
I don't want any one too feel left out, if you don't want a free pattern of mine off Craftsy you are welcome to a Free class of your choice below on Craftsy (Yeah, Yeah they are free classes already, but your still a winner in my book!)

1) Craftsy Block of the Month 2013 with Laura Nownes - As a new quilter I suggest this class as it will give you some great hints and suggestions on block construction throughout the whole year.
2) QuiltCon Lecture Series 2013 - I am a member of the Salt Lake Modern Quilt Guild and as such was sad that I was not able to go to QuiltCon.  So at my request (OK, well maybe it had nothing to do with me) they were kind enough to put together a lecture series so that I did not have to completely miss out on the experience.
3) Creative Quilt Backs with Elizabeth Hartman - This week is HMQS her in Salt Lake City, Utah (well Thursday - Saturday of this week) as a special treat the SLMQG was lucky enough to get Elizabeth Hartman to come talk to our guild tonight!  So I am so excited I get to meet her tonight and learn directly from her.  For the rest of you, you can enjoy this free class.

Thank you for visiting Richard and Tanya quilts today, please feel free to follow us though any of the options you can find on the menu to the right and please stop by Sew Mama Sew to find the many other giveaway that are open today.  For those that will be attending HMQS, keep a look out as I will have 2 quilts hanging check them out and let me know what you think.  If you can't make HMQS check back later this week and I will take pictures and share.

P.S. We will ship internationally.

Julia's First B-Day with Quilt Giveaway!!!

I can not believe it has already been a year since Julia was born on 3/28/2012.  Julia is why Tanya and I started to quilt.  If you have been following for the last year you know that we gave away 2 quilts last year for her B-Day we did a giveaway to pick her Birth Weight and to pick her Birth Date. This year to honor her we would like to giveaway a Baby Quilt or Lap Blanket.  I like to give choices so the winner of this giveaway can have a Custom Quilt made for them (baby or lap size)  This is and example of a simple pattern I did last night in EQ7.

First let me explain the color does not have to be Gray and Orange.  It can be any color (with in reason) you desire.  For example I can make a Gray and Pink or what ever you pick color combo.  I like the random 2 1/2 in blocks sewn into 5 x 5 blocks like the gray and orange quilt I have been making. OR you can pick any quilt on our Etsy Store $50 or less.  Examples of some now on our store.

So you have a few choices a custom made quilt or a quilt from the store.  Now what do you have to do to win the quit?  Simple Share this giveaway with some one.

You can have up to 4 chances to win.  So you can share this giveaway 4 different ways.  It can be a post on your blog sharing the giveaway.  It can be a email to your friend.  You can share this giveaway on Facebook.  You can share the giveaway with twitter.  You can share on Google+ .  You can share it with the guy over the fence.  Since this is a complete quilt keep in mind your non quilting friends as this would be a great gift for them and if they have a baby even better!

Simply leave 1 comment listing how you shared it (for each share so 4 comments max).  If you shared it on a media we can see please share that link in the comment so I can check it out.  We will have Julia pick a name out of a bowl after 1 week has passed so some time next Friday we will stop taking entry's.  I will also offer this same giveaway on our Facebook page so you can enter there too that post will be later tonight

400 GFC Follower Giveaway!

Today we are celebrating our 400+ follower though GFC.  Richard and Tanya Quilts has come a long long way since that first desire to quilt about a year and half ago.

I would like to share a few of my favorites along the way before getting to the giveaway.  The first up is the first quilt I made for Julia Hearts and Flowers it is a rag quilt made with cotton fabric rather than flannel on the top.  We appliqued hearts on to some of the squares and ragged the edges of the hearts.

From the beginning of our quilting, Tanya and I have not been good at following patterns or even doing things in a traditional manner.  We like to mix things up and make them more creative.  From mixing techniques like rag quilts and applique to doing non tradition mix of fabrics and styles.  To in a sense, making a style all our own.
For the first while Tanya and I made only rag quilts, and boy did we make a lot of them.  Mostly this was because we could not figure out how to quilt and bind a quilt and had to go slow at doing this.  Train Wrek was the first of our Quilted quilts and was like most of our quilts a quilt designed by us more out of frustration then plan.  This is where I learned that you should have a plan long before you sit and quilt and have enough fabric.

I have made many quilts based on ideas that I have found on other blogs and my blog following is long.  When I checked today even I was amazed that on my following list is over 1000 blogs.  Not all quilting, but most are.  I follow too many blogs to read every one ever day any more, but I do enjoy taking the time when I do have time to read as many as I can and more importantly look at the quilts made by others.

Last year my goal was to complete 52 quilts in 52 weeks.  I have not gone back and figured out exactly how many quilts we made, but it did exceed that.  My goals this year have shifted to maybe a little less quilts to more quality and more designed out quilts.

For example I made Pillar of Fire using a pattern that I created and shared called Helix you can follow that link to download the pattern.  Tanya is also working on some patterns to share this year as we try to focus a little more on quality and process and less on quantity and speed.  One problem we realized early on is if I am making 50+ quilts I have to find people willing to take them off my hands.  That sounds easy at first, but you have only so many friends and family to take them all.

Because of this last year Tanya started our Etsy store at https://www.etsy.com/shop/RichardQuilts where we sell some of the excess items.  It is slowly starting to be found and we have been able to sell a few of our quilts.

One thing you will be sure to find at our blog is a variety of quilts and quilting styles.  Tanya and I both have different tastes and different styles.  As a way to appeal to all audiences we have tried to make our blog and its posts available in different locations.  We also started a Facebook page so we could reach out to those (like Tanya) that use it.  You can find us at http://www.facebook.com/RichardAndTanyaQuilts.  I am a fan of visual ideas and unlike Tanya I am not a huge fan of Facebook, but I do enjoy Pintrest and you can find us at http://pinterest.com/richardandtanyaquilts/  I love to see what people like and follow.   I like to share what inspires me on it.

Well enough talk, lets get to the giveaway.  First I would like to thank our sponsor http://www.fatquartershop.com/ for making this giveaway possible.

Please remember to thank our sponsor by visiting their store at http://www.fatquartershop.com/ their blog http://www.fatquartershop.blogspot.com/ and Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/FatQuarterShop
