Large bag of old leftover fabrics

Back on March 13th I posted about a Lady near me that brought me some old stash that she wanted to get rid of this was material from her husbands mother who had passed away a few years earlier.  You might remember that I made my Summer Fun Hot Pads from it (and gave her a pair) and I also made the quilt for my dad from it.  Most recently I started making a quilt that as of the moment my wife refers to as the 80's Quilt.  Saturday morning before we left for the last 3 shops on the shop ho,p this pile above showed up in a big black trash bag.  Below is a side look at it.

This pile came from the same lady Sarah, she sews but she does not quilt.  She was blown away with what she had already seen that I made and found some more stuff (we filled a huge box with the pile) it was a bulging bag.  So if you think I bought a lot of stuff during the shop hop I just inherited more.  This is going to be a lot of fun.  I have not yet even sat down to look though it.  This is remants from 3 different past quilters (one was her) the other 2 much much older.  She said some of the material dates back to the 40's and 50's up to the 90's or so from her old stash.  I just cant wait to divide these into color groups and figure out what I plan to make first out of it.

WAIT!! stop the presses.  What is this? Oh I found 10 blocks that are roughly 9 inches in the pile of material (While Tanya found it I honestly have not even looked at it yet but will this week)

With my new love of EQ7 I created a mock up of a quilt (wont show you the picture it looks way bad) and this will be wonderful.  Tanya is digging though the material out of the bag (its now in a box) and looking for pieces of the originals to use.  Our quilt is going to have 20 blocks so the 10 original ones and 10 more of some kind or other (not circles as I am not quite up to that yet but loved them).  This quilt might just bump its way forward in the line of other quilts I am working on.  I love to be inspired by the quilts err blocks I find.

Progress and Shopping

I have made progress on the flight of the dragonfly's quilt for the 2 girls.  I have 35 squares sewn together (its a 9 x 9 block) and have about 15 of those blocks cut in half flipped around and then sewn back together.  The plan is to have 3.5 rows wide and 5 rows long (times 2) they will be placed in brick format.  They are looking great so far.  I am still having a hard time sewing straight and cutting them in half but hey they are cool even with the little flaws in them.   Yesterday I showed off my quilt for Doug to my brother he liked it, but said it was too small.  He wants a large queen size (a little longer and wider then a normal queen) and he wanted different material.  So the 2 of us went shopping at Jo-Ann's I was surprised by the 3 materials he picked.   They look good but not what I would have guessed.  I also was able to give Doug his quilt last night (We are 11 year old scout leaders) He knew I was making him the quilt, but even knowing that he acted so funny when I gave him the quilt.   MEN! oh wait that's what my wife would say.  LOL He then asked me how is he supposed to explain to his family he got a quilt and they do not.  He has 2 cute little girls 6 and 4.  I am sure in time I will just have to make them up a lap quilt.  But his older boys, bah they will have to fend for themselves. Thanks for all the comments yesterday on the Hot pads.  I need to get them all made and perhaps give a few away.  Will have to come up with a good idea on that one. Thanks for all the advice and suggestions.  I am new at this please put your 2 cents in and get me going in the right direction.

Some one hide my CC!

I am officially a Quilting Addict and some one needs to stop me!  Wait don't stop me I am having too much fun.    I am new to quilting so lack the stash that others might have after years of quilting. Last week in my post The need for a stash!! I talked about my Trip to Joann's and my million year wait at the cut table.  While I did not learn from my mistake last week.  I again visited Joann's on the weekend.  But while you see I had this 20% off every thing coupon on my phone (android Joann's App that gives weekly coupons) and I had this 50% off coupon (paper coupon). And as it turns out they are having 40% off a lot of material.  So I sort of had to go shopping.  In my own defense, I did take my wife to visit my LQS (oh ya learned a cool term and had to share it) before I visited Joann's,  I visited The Material Girls Quilts they are not the closet quilting shop or even the second closest too me but hey I follow their blog had to show them some love. This morning I saw their post about the last day of their 30% off sale and when making the to-do list for the day added them to my list.   They are close to where I work (about 2 miles I think) but they are about 20 miles from my house.  The sale ended today so I just had to go today.  I have never yet bought any of the Moda fabrics. But have admired them from things I found on the web.  I was able to talk my wife into getting a charm pack for my daughter Rebecca and I bought 3 more black & white materials for my Man Quilts for my brother in laws and my self.  My wife kept looking at the materials in the Layer Cake, but kept putting it back.I finally twisted her arm and bought that.   I have to note out of every thing I bought today that is the only item that does not belong to a current project on the Quilting List which you can read on my Resolved to sew 2012 blog post yesterday.

I have yet to talk tell you what I bought at Joann's, but already you have seen above purples and greens and to the right my John Deere collection.  As I said I have no stash.  While I have one now.  The purple on the upper right is for 2 pieced top lap blankets one for my Rebecca and one for the only Girl Cousin she has (keep this quiet its for her Christmas present next year).  The green on the left is for a Lap blanket (rag quilt style) for my son Jared who has this fascination with green.  His first trip to Joann's he had 5 bolts of green material in the cart before I knew what he was doing.  Now I know how my mom felt with me as a kid in the material store.
The John Deere materials (all 4 are John Deere prints) the 3 on top will be the front and the big one behind will be the back for 2 lap blankets one for my father in law and one for a brother in law both of them live out in the country and  while drive John Deere Equipment and neither quite get me and my computer's.   Again a Christmas present so keep these under raps for me (good thing they both don't know what the Internet is).

So your thinking to your self.  He must be done now.  Nope more material below. On the left some sinfully cheap charm squares for Rebecca and some black material for the Man Quilts (the 3 others on top are a repeat from above don't know how I managed that one.  Any way walked out of Joann's with a bill for just over $150, but I saved $145 not bad for a shopping trip. Those 50% off and 20% off of already 40% off items was a killer deal.  I think the only thing I had to pay full price for was one of the John Deere Prints.  Oh I did save 30% off at Material Girls which I have to say I will go back and visit again.  Now for those of you that are not half blind (like me) you will see that their is some fine print on the bottom of the post (under the last 2 images) My wife did not not like my title and asked me to add the fine print to explain it, so good luck reading it. Wow what a day, almost $200 and I have a stash.  And about 6-8 quilts worth of material.  Now some one please shoot me if I go shopping next Saturday!

Wife says I need to put in the fine print some where that my CC in question was a debit card meaning that I paid for all my material with cash on hand and did not charge up the credit card.  Now if you can read this fine print then you tried too hard to read it. And while nothing useful is in it so stop now! No really fine print is never meant to be read, its just their to annoy you and let you know some lawyer was involved. And who in the world wants a lawyer involved in any thing.

The need for a stash!!

Saturday was a busy day.  I woke up made the kids clean the house as my wife is a Webelos Leader in cub scouts leader.  Our front room has turned into my sewing room.  We live in a small house so I don't have any other place that I can sew. We had to fold up, pick up, re-arrange, all of the sewing stuff to fit nicely in the corner (which for some reason it does not any more).  In the process of the cleaning I decided that I was going to once and for all finish the first quilt I started.  It has lovingly been named "Train Wrek".  You say love?  Any way it needs a back and binding (and the last row sewn on got mad at a blunder and just tossed it into a box the week of Christmas).  So I started a list of what I needed to buy at the store.  By the time cleanup was done I had 3 backs I needed to buy for 2 of my quilts and a quilt my daughter Rebecca wants to make.  After cleanup and the scout meeting my friend Doug came over and I showed him the materials that I was going to make some Rag Lap blankets out of for me and 3-4 extra to give away.  (one for him) any way in sitting and talking he let it out that he hated 3 of the 5 materials that I had for it (though he still thinks I am nuts to be quilting, not enough manly killing involved (video games).  So I asked him what did he like.  Paisley is what I found out he likes so now I had to add that too the shopping list.

We went to Joann's shopping arriving their shortly after lunch time (ate out at sizzler with the wife).  We ended up with 1 flanel for my girl needed 3 yards, needed a few backs for baby blankets wanted 2 yards each on 2 materials, and ended up with 1 yard each of 4 paisley-ish materials in black and grays (one with red that should spice the quilt up).  So with a huge pile of bolts I wander over to the cutting table.  Wow did not realize so many people could stand in one place.  I grabbed my number ticket it was number 82 I think and looked up at the sign just as they called number 58 or something.  Standing behind the counter was a single person cutting. UGH this is going to be a long long day.

By the time I got home and got the kids under control dinner time was approaching and my goal of getting 2 projects finished today went right out the window.  Any way ordered a pizza and quilted the night away while watching 3-4 different shows.

Oh yeah the reason I named the post.  Published it and then realized my name did not match content.  I need a stash so that days like this can be all quilting and no long lines buying material.  And a note to the unwise like me, shopping for material Saturday afternoon is not a smart idea.
