Link a Finish Friday #27

Today's Post comes to you from Richard

Wow, I can not believe another week has come and gone.  I feel like its been months since I have been able to spend any time sewing and its really only been a few days.  I am a computer programmer by day and when I was showing off something of mine to a friend at work, I realized that something was broken (On one of my many web sites).  That lead to me doing some things that I had been putting off forever on another website.  And of course Julia is getting cuter and busier by the day (and taking more of my time).  So you are asking why all this dribble, your not talking about quilting.

I am right now thinking about Dresden's, I belong to the SLMQG and they are having a contest at the end of this month (well next month is the linkup time). You see they are all women and I am not one. I can't be beat by a bunch of women (well my wife beats me all the time, but we won't talk about that) any way I do not dare show up to next months meeting with out a Dresden quilt of some kind.  I have yet to get inspired.  I am thinking of doing a baby quilt, but have yet to pick material or even get inspired on design.  The above image by way is from a Dresden Tutorial on Sew Mama Sew and am linking it here as one idea as to what I want to do (or while how to make a Dresden).

So I need help.  If you have a Dresden quilt that you have worked on in the last 6 months or completed please link them up today (I need ideas).  Also I need Dresden advice.  If you know of a tutorial that is easier or even a different idea of how to make them please leave a note and let me know where it is.

One last question for the road.  I have a large wedge ruler and a small one.  Is it easier to make bigger Dresden's or smaller Dresden's.

Winner of LAFF

Life has been busy the last few days.  On Saturday we went hiking as a family. We went up by Lake Solitude which is basically between, Brighton and Solitude Ski Resorts. Richard and I need to get in better shape, we were very tired the next day.  James, our oldest is camping/backpacking with scouts in the high Unitas for the week. We have been busy getting last minute preps for his camp.

I have been working on the purple quilt for my step-mother.  I have all the blocks done and the 4 rows or 3 blocks sewn together. I didn't notice that I had one row wrong direction for picture, good thing they aren't sewn together yet.

Richard has been working on his 12 days quilts. (Richard now taking over the blog post, Tanya wrote every thing above)

I love giving things away and now that I quilt I have a special project I am working on for Christmas.  Now normally I am not a do something long ahead guy, but I don't want to do it in small scale I always think huge.  My family for the past few years (I think 4-5?) has been doing secret Santa.  It started out a lady I home taught (church thing) was kinda sad and not in a Christmas mood so the 12 days leading up to Christmas we brought a gift and left it on their door step.  Our family had so much fun giving that each year since my wife starts shopping the after Christmas sales for cheap gifts and we have been preparing a box.  We like to do a bigger gift the last day and  this year I want to give a 12 days wall hanging,  you can follow that link for where I found this great idea.  Any way its a mini wall quilt with 12 blocks, the first having 1 material going upwards for the last block, yep you guessed it to have 12 pieces.  I got to counting all the people I need to make one for (we are doing 3 families this year), my own, my home teaching families, my friend at work, a guy down the street.   By the time I got done counting, I ran out of fingers and the toes were close to gone also.  So the above shot is the first 7 days done.  Each stack has about 20 blocks in it (except the last 2 I did not cut enough the first time, so will just come back for them when I get the other blocks done)

Needless to say all this cutting and sewing the last 5 or so days on this project made me hungry.  So I decided Sunday that I wanted cinnamon rolls and of course in my giving spirit I wanted to take some to work.  Tanya agreed to help me make them if I wanted some.  So I made some. You can thank BeccaCooks for the directions to make your own..

Now that my fingers are tired and my belly is full I am going to sit down and watch TV.  You know I have a link for this too.  http://trackmyshows.com/ is another site of mine that I created (free to use) so that myself and others can keep track of whats on TV.  You can create a user account.  Find shows that you like to watch, and then using the calendar or the quick list page find out what they should be watching tonight on TV.  My list tells me that I have Warehouse 12 and Perception that I can watch tonight while I sit down and try to pound out another block or 2.

Link A Finish Friday #26

Another week has come and gone and again its time to do LAFF.  This is a new month and we will be picking new winners for the 2 Fat Quarters won for last month.  My wife will put all the names in a hat and have Jared pick it out some time Saturday so we can get it posted

This last week I have finished another quilt (my lizards) and sadly my wife is giving it away.  She seems to like my lizards from a far (she hates when I keep them at home) Though during our married life we have had 2 different Iguana's and many many blue bellies that I have caught over the years.  I think the lizards are getting faster as I don't seem to catch as many as I use too.  Though I take a few more pictures of them.

This month starts my 8th month quilting and as such my skills increase and I hope that yours is also.  I would like every one to set a goal of completing 1 Quilt this month.  If you can not complete a quilt complete a top, if not a top a block.  What ever you complete please link it up and share it with the rest of us.  We all need encouragement (me and you alike) Please take the time to visit a few of the completes and let them know how proud of them you are.

Lizard Quilt Finish

Richard asked me, (Tanya) to write a post about his latest finish, the Lizard Baby Quilt.  Wow, posts by me two days in a row.
Yesterday on WIP Wednesday, we posted a sneak peak of the finished lizard quilt.  The backing for this quilt is a green dimpled minky fabric.  We bought too much when we bought it to finish Jared's Jean Quilt, yes I know it has not been finished yet.   So it was especially fitting to use the minky for the baby of my step-brother Jared.  Are you confused yet? I have to use mine and yours when mentioning the name to my step-mother.  Here is a picture of it in Julia's Crib.  Julia loves minky, hopefully his baby will too. 

Anyway this quilt was quilted using in the ditch method.  A bright multi-colored thread was used on front and a green thread on back.  We used a bright multi-colored fabric for the binding, we had thought of using the same black with colored polka dots, but couldn't remember where we had bought it.  We bought all this fabric for the quilt top while doing both Utah shop hops in June.  We didn't take real good notes on exactly what was bought at which location. Maybe it was because after that many stores, we couldn't see straight.  The pictures are not real great, working a night shift makes taking pictures outside a little more difficult.  OK a lot more difficult, there is no light outside at 2 am, so pictures are taken inside.

Our stash has been expanding and is quite large for having been quilting such a short time.  We are trying to use fabric out of stash as much as possible. Our biggest problem is we tend not to buy backing or batting at the same time as we buy fabric for quilt tops.  When do you buy backing for quilt, in planning stage or after top is already made. 

Sometime we will have to post a picture of our sewing room.  It is not as organized as many I have seen on other blogs.  At least it is now out of our front room. It would take over an hour to put some of the sewing stuff away, meaning the ability to find couch, before known visitors would show up.

Richard is a little side-tracked and is on another quilting tangent at moment.  He is starting 12 days mini quilts out of civil war era replica fabric.  They will be used as Christmas gifts. He plans on making at least 16, but had cut out enough of some blocks for 22.  ADHD and quilting, always another fun tangent.

Work In Progress Wed Tanya Style #22

Things Richard is working on:

Still working on Country Blue & Pink ColorBlast Quilt.  More sashings added and three rows sewed together.  Crib size lizard quilt is finished and just in time.  This is the first time that minky was used by either of us for a backing.  The baby (step-nephew) is scheduled to be born next week by C-section.  I need to finish the borders on the gray- multicolored batik quilt, then it will be ready for Tanya to baste. 

(Richard will post more pictures on its own post late wed, as it will be completed in its own post, but here is a sneak peak).

(Yes its sideways (or so for me) in my editor it was up and down.  I am adding pictures for Tanya on our computer set up in the quilt room, but its not being nice to me, but hey here are pictures)

Things Tanya is working on:

More blocks partially done on Meagan's quilt out of the Amelia line. They still need a blanket stitch around raw edge appliques.  There a few without appliques added yet.  10 of 20 blocks are mostly done.  The blocks have a lot of variation in colors, some with appliques, some without.   Once they are done, Richard will sew sashings and add borders on them. Then I will baste them and Richard will quilt it.  Yes, mine seem to be more of a joint project than a personal one. 

Two more of the Beginners QAL blocks are finished that haven't been shown yet.

The purple rag quilt with appliques is frustrating me (Tanya).  Richard makes it seem so easy to sew them together.  After unpicking one row several times, because nothing was lining up, I set it to the side and it has been there for almost a month.

Joint Projects:

Twirl crib size quilt top made by me, has been basted and now Richard is practicing random free motion quilting on it.  Julia seems to be our scape goat for her quilts. 

(Richard here again, jumping in I tried to take some pictures of the FMQ that I did for practice, but it did not show up well, I did my FMQ a few different ways.  We bought some stencils of some waves and flowers, and a larger stippling template.  On each end of the quilt we have the flower - wave - flower -wave -flower pattern. Then I used the large stippling pattern and did 4 of the blocks.  Then I did 2 other blocks by hand stippling and lastly I tried to do pebbles.  On the pebbles I was having a lot of issues holding the quilt (Fat hands and no gloves to hold with need to go shopping).  I ended up just sorta scribbling on the quilt and my wife threatened to pick it out and I would not let her (Remember practice) Any way at a stale mate on it now.  But it is about 1/8 th of the way quilted.)

The first of 3 various purple themed quilts is started.  The first is a quilt top for Debbie (Tanya's stepmother).  We are doing 6 blocks Double Churn and 6 blocks Rail Fence or some modification there of.  I cut the fabric for the first six blocks and Richard sewed the 2 1/2 in strips and  HST together.  Next I started sewing them together.  I finished 5 of the six blocks.  They would have been done,but I ran out of thread in bobbin, just as it was time to start thinking about going to work. 

(Thank you Tanya for making the post tonight.  I have been in a ho-hum mood and been slacking as to my blog posting and she helped me out today.  One last note James took a picture of some of my quilts that are for sell on etsy and I wanted to share them with you as that also is a WIP to try and sell some of the extra quilts we have.)
